Chipmunks redux…

My older sister Susan reminded me — in an email — about a stuffed toy that she had sent to Ray — a little “house” full of chipmunks — they had gotten stuffed away in a box and Ray had not “seen” them for months — so, I dug them out and in a second Ray grabbed one of the toy chipmunks by the tail and was flipping it into the air pouncing and tossing it up again — a reunion…

Ray is going on three years now (!) and is mellowing a little — he has much more social confidence generally — is much more willing to come out and explore when new people are in the house.  He is also very affectionate when we are in predictable locales — for example, when I sit on our bed for any reason Ray will come racing into the bedroom and jump up onto the bed — bumps me and purrs — often stretches out across the comforter… He does not sleep with us at night but is very aware of where we are and if I get up at  400am he will immediately come up onto the bed and make contact for a few minutes — sometimes even snuggling quietly for a while with my hand along his side…  Very sweet…

Ray & Rug

Ray & Rug

Was walking into the dining room a few weeks ago and noticed a lump in the rug… (Mental note — walk carefully at home!)

We realized — soon after his arrival– that Ray had a penchant for kumquats — we’d fill a bowl with fresh kumquats and — if we were careless enough to leave them on the dining room table — we come out in the morning and find several missing — then we notice them in odd corners, under chairs or tables, occasionally we’d discover a squashed one with our bare feet…

So, obviously (?) –something had to be done.

On a trip to Athens, Georgia we noticed, in a small shop, bags of “slingshot ammo” (SEE: http://www.thefancy.com/things/336818055021596667/Felt-Slingshot-Ammo-by-HellaSlingshots-on-Etsy ) — small felt balls of variegated colors — the size of marbles…

Insight.

Buy several bags of these and fill a bowl. In lieu of kumquats.

It continues to work. After an active night, we’ll find a dozen felt balls scattered around the house.

But, a few weeks ago I brought home some kumquats and left them high up on the kitchen counter.
Next morning, at the threshold of the kitchen, a kumquat.

Ray, following his nose, had found the bowl — and for nostalgia’s sake? — had flipped one out…

Window RayComing home, 2-3 weeks ago I looked up to a back window of our apartmenr and there was Ray… “watching”…

Ray shoulder

I was sitting and reading this afternoon and felt a presence above and behind me — Ray had climbed up from the arm of my chair to the back…

He routinely joins me — on the arm of the chair whenever I sit down to read…
